Artist profile
Abhishek Dodiya
b. 1984 · Indian
Born in 1984 (Gujarat), Abhishek studied sculpture at College of Fine Arts, Ahmedabad, followed by a PDVA from MSU Baroda. He focuses on how objects are connected with humans and their psychology. His work encourages viewers to experience the character of the surface and revisit lived events. He likes to use materials from a construction site, like metal scrap and cement. He is himself a master welder who learnt by watching his father weld furniture since his childhood. His practice is engaged in dismantling and reconstruction. The inspiration often comes from deep observation of his surroundings. He invites viewers to experience the open-endedness of the surface of the work that revisits lived events, compounded with complexities of emotions. His Cyclone series is particularly noteworthy, where he has used metal sheets that seem malleable to the softest touch. His documentation of the recent devastating storms in the coastal areas of Gujarat is a grim reminder of the potential impact of climate crisis. Abhishek’s large-scale work is in the collection of and on display on campus at Plaksha University in Mohali.
